Getting a California driver license

Every California driver license is issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. This page outlines the usual steps in plain terms. Requirements change, so always confirm the current rules with the DMV before you go.

Start with the DMV

The California DMV website is the only source that matters for licensing rules. It lists the current documents, fees, tests and appointment options, and it publishes the California Driver Handbook, which covers everything on the knowledge test. Many tasks can be started online, and some offices take appointments. Drive Sacramento is not connected to the DMV in any way.

If you are moving here with a license from another state

New residents are expected to get a California license soon after they become residents. The DMV sets the deadline, and at the time of writing it is short, about 10 days, so check it early. The usual steps:

  1. Start an application online through the DMV website.
  2. Gather proof of identity, proof of California residency and your Social Security number, as the DMV lists them.
  3. Visit a DMV office to have your photo and thumbprint taken, pass a vision test and pay the fee.
  4. Take the knowledge test if the DMV requires it for your situation. The handbook covers what is on it.
  5. Hand in your out-of-state license when the DMV asks for it.

A drive test is not always required for drivers with a valid license from another state, but the DMV decides case by case. Your car will also need California registration. See new in town.

First-time adult drivers

If you are 18 or older and have never been licensed, the general path is an instruction permit first, then practice with a licensed adult, then a behind-the-wheel drive test. Study the handbook before the knowledge test, and take as many practice drives as you need before you book the drive test.

Teen drivers

California has a graduated license system for drivers under 18. In general terms, teens complete driver education, get a permit, do supervised practice driving and hold the permit for a set time before taking the drive test. The first year of a provisional license comes with limits on late-night driving and on carrying young passengers. The DMV sets the exact ages, hours and limits and explains the exceptions, so read the teen section of its site with your parent or guardian.

REAL ID

California offers a REAL ID version of its driver license and ID card. It needs more documents than a standard license. If you plan to use your license to board domestic flights, check the DMV's REAL ID page for what to bring.

Preparing for the drive test

  • Practice in the kinds of places you will be tested: residential streets, intersections with stop signs and signals, lane changes and parking.
  • Make sure the car you bring is in working order, with valid registration and proof of insurance, as the DMV requires.
  • Know your car's controls: lights, wipers, defroster, hazards and parking brake.
  • Check over your shoulder for every lane change, and come to a full stop at stop signs.

License questions

Can I keep using my out-of-state license?

Visitors can generally drive with a valid license from their home state. Once you become a California resident, you need a California license within the time the DMV sets.

Where do I find the driver handbook?

The California Driver Handbook is free on the DMV website. It is the best study guide for the knowledge test.
