What we cover
The site covers the main freeways and how they connect, rush-hour patterns, tule fog, summer heat, parking downtown, getting a California license, a checklist for newcomers and trips to the mountains. Start with the freeways if you are new to the area.
Who it is for
People who have just moved to the Sacramento area, visitors driving in for the first time, new drivers and anyone who wants the network explained in one place. No local knowledge is assumed.
How we handle facts
- We describe roads and conditions in general terms that hold true over time, such as which way a freeway runs and what it connects to.
- We don't publish traffic counts, travel times, crash figures or other statistics, because they change and we can't keep them current.
- We don't list prices, fees or deadlines as fixed facts. Where a deadline matters, we say so and send you to the agency that sets it.
- Anything about laws, licensing or safety is general information. The California DMV, Caltrans and the CHP have the final word, and signs on the road always come first.
About the diagrams
The freeway diagram and the route shields on this site are drawn by code from a small set of route data. The diagram is a schematic, like a transit map: it shows the order of junctions and the general direction of each road, not distances or exact shapes. Use a real map for navigation.
What we are not
We are not Caltrans, the California DMV, the California Highway Patrol, the City of Sacramento, SacRT or any other public agency, and we are not affiliated with any of them. We don't sell anything, accept payment for coverage or use partner links. We are not a driving school.

About Drive Sacramento: FAQ
Can you help with my DMV appointment or a ticket?
No. We are an independent guide with no access to any agency's systems. Contact the DMV, the court or the agency named on your ticket directly.
Why no live traffic?
Live traffic needs live data. Caltrans QuickMap and online maps already do that well, so we link to them instead.
